HOW and WHERE TO VOTE:
The CITY election and the County/State/National election are entirely different voting processes (different ballots, different drop-boxes, different polling stations), because the City has different criteria on who can vote.
You can vote in the City election by mail, by drop-box, or in person.
City in-person voting is in the Community Center on Maple Avenue on Nov 5th. Presidential voting (federal/state/county offices) is at your regular polling station (usually a local school or church). To vote in person in both elections, you must visit both voting locations. (Look up your Presidential/State polling station HERE).
There are also two separate drop-boxes for the two elections, at 7500 Maple Ave, outside the police station on the underground level. There is another city dropbox outside the New Hampshire Rec center. The city drop-boxes are bright yellow. Put your ballots in the right boxes!

LISTING A FIRST, SECOND, and THIRD CHOICE:
Takoma Park has Ranked Choice Voting, meaning that you can list your first and second choice in a three-way race like this one, and it can make a difference. It does not effect your first choice in any way if you list a second choice. If you have another first choice, please consider listing Roger as your second choice. For more on how Ranked Choice Voting works go to the City website page HERE.
WHAT’S MY WARD?
The City redistricted and changed the Ward boundaries after the 2020 census, and some blocks were moved in, or out, of Ward 3. Check this map:
Transparency matters. See Takoma Park’s election info page for candidates’ campaign finance reports posted in late September, mid-October, and post-election.
Takoma Park Government in a Nutshell
- Our City has a “Council-Manager” form of government:
- Residents elect six ward Councilmembers and an at-large Mayor to two-year terms.
- Wards consist of about 3,000 residents each.
- The seven-member Council appoints a City Manager, who hires all other staff to carry out programs and enforce laws and policies.
- The Council’s most important functions are:
- Seek and respond to residents’ input
- Set policy (pass ordinances)
- Create and update strategic plans
- Lead the annual budget process, deciding upon expenditures and setting tax and fee rates
- Providing ongoing oversight of policies, programs, and initiatives
- Hold the Manager accountable for implementing programs and enforcing laws and policies.
- City areas of responsibility are restricted by, and sometimes overlap with, those of the County and State.
- Our City revenue stream comes from a combination of local, County, and State resources.
